Couples Workshops for 2020

Couples Workshops for 2020: February 21 & 22, March 21 & 22, April 18 & 19, May 16 & 17

Love is the crucible, the un-meltable, changeless container in which we’re tested by fire, melted down, and transformed. In love, we are formed and reformed by the white heat of unexpected re-visitation of all the things in us that cry out to be healed, most of which is our shame and hurt, our fears, our insecurities, our conflicts and our endless inner controversies. Through our beloved, our partner, we are once again brought face to face with what is unresolved in us. We meet again our father’s absence or our brother’s envy, our mother’s cruelty or our sister’s competition. We see our own childhoods mirrored in every direction in all of our relationships. Through love, we are invited to reenter them again but differently. To re-experience and grieve the losses of the past and thus to redeem and heal now.

Do we have to air our dirty laundry in front of other couples?

Do we have to air our dirty laundry in front of other couples?

Prior to couples coming into the GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT WORKSHOP, some of the most asked questions I hear are:

Is this confidential?

Do we have to air our dirty laundry in front of other couples?

Is everybody going to know our personal business?

The answer to that is that the GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT workshop is a workshop. That’s exactly what it is. If you look at what the content of a workshop is, it’s more about education.

It’s not therapy, but it is utilizing tools that you learn in the workshop. Everyone breaks off into dyads and does the work back and forth. We give an assignment and you go and do it. So, the other couples are really unaware of what is going on in the space between you and your partner.

We have many sections during the workshop for:

  • Feedback
  • Question & Answer
  • Breaks
  • Snacks

Everyone just connects and it’s a beautiful process.

Joining a couples workshop is a great place to start before deciding to try therapy.

Make sure to come to our next Long Island couples workshop this January 26 & 27, 2019.

“Imagine you are walking in the woods and you see a small dog sitting by a tree. As you approach it, it suddenly lunges at you, teeth bared. You are frightened and angry. But then you notice that one of its legs is caught in a trap. Immediately your mood shifts from anger to concern: You see that the dog’s aggression is coming from a place of vulnerability and pain. This applies to all of us. When we behave in hurtful ways, it is because we are caught in some kind of trap. The more we look through the eyes of wisdom at ourselves and one another, the more we cultivate a compassionate heart.”

– Tara Brach

Empathy is directly related to one’s satisfaction with a romantic partner, and therefore, most approaches to couples therapy explicitly address empathy as a means for creating positive relational change.

When faced with a disagreement, how do you usually react?

Are you able to see / hear your partner’s views with an open mind?

Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is practiced at The Huntington Relationship Center in Long Island, NY. Imago is a form of marriage therapy that takes a relationship approach rather than an individual approach to problem solving in a marriage. It was co-developed by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt, and documented in Hendrix’s 1988 book, “Getting the Love You Want, A Guide for Couples.”
